Westbrook Housing Authority (WHA) provides opportunities for professionals just starting their careers, young families laying down roots, and seniors in search of safe, secure homes for their later years. WHA tailors affordability to community needs. The mission of Westbrook Housing is to assist extremely-low to moderate-income families with safe, decent, and affordable housing opportunities and improve the quality of their lives as they strive to achieve self-sufficiency. WHA has an extension in the form of Westbrook Development Corporation, a widely- recognized developer.

Housing Choice Voucher program

The Section 8 tenant-based program is offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and isWestbrook Housing Authority probably the most popular of its subsidy programs because it enables low-income clients to rent a home in the community of their choice. HUD provides guidelines for rent based on family size and gross annual income. Tenants can expect to pay 30% of their income-more if the apartment exceeds the guidelines. Tenants also pay a full security deposit and they are held responsible for the actions of their household and visitors.

Westbrook Housing administers the Section 8 tenant-based program. It consists of 655 tenant-based and 150 project-based Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers at Larrabee Village.WHA portfolio includes, among others, a 100-unit, multistory apartment building, a single-family townhouse community, luxury market-rate condominiums in a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, and industrial-style lofts in an abandoned riverside mill. The WHA works with community landlords. Westbrook Housing pays nearly $5 million a year in Housing Assistant Payments to about 300 participating property owners in Westbrook andWestbrook Housing Authority within a 10-mile radius (not including South Portland and Biddeford). Every apartment must pass a Housing Quality Inspection to ensure that homes are safe. This also encourages property owners to maintain their buildings, as well as keeping owners abreast of local and federal housing regulations.

Applications for Housing Choice Voucher program are available at the Westbrook Housing office Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. It can also be downloaded from http://www.westbrookhousing.org/. Applications can also be picked up at Portland Housing and South Portland Housing.
